Why Choose Mathematics?Mathematics is a formal method of critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication. Numbers are simply its tools for thinking and communicating. As such, mathematics is the 'language' of description, analysis, and design for many sectors of our society. A command of mathematical skills and processes enables one to deal with complex problems and large masses of data, efficiently and effectively, to solve practical problems or consider theoretical alternatives. With the recent growth in information technology, knowledge management, and the global marketplace, these skills have become even more important in modern society. Professional OpportunitiesBecause mathematics is used in so many sectors of our society, mathematics majors are highly employable in a wide array of professional fields. These include science, engineering, economics, demography, manufacturing, insurance, educational assessment, public policy analysis, computer science, business, accounting, and many other fields of work. The Mathematics major is excellent preparation for graduate study in such areas as accounting, economics, or computer science, or for immediate entry into the workforce. Admission RequirementsFirst year student admission is open to high school graduates (or equivalent) who demonstrate academic preparedness, maturity and seriousness of purpose with educational backgrounds appropriate to their chosen program of study. High school courses and grade point average, ACT composite score, and ACT reading and mathematics subscores will be considered in the admission and placement process. Transfer students must have at least 12 credits at the time of application with a minimum 2.0 overall GPA including an English and mathematics course, or they must provide their high school records and ACT scores for admission review. Graduation RequirementsIn order to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, a student must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours including the Mathematics major, the BA core, an academic minor in another field of study, and all general education requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree.
