Why Choose Environmental Health & Safety Management?

Increased concern over the safety of the air, water and physical environment creates a need for professionals to work behind the scenes to assure the safety of workers and the general public. Individuals with an interest in working to prevent accidents before they happen will find this career both challenging and rewarding.

The Environmental Health and Safety Management Program prepares graduates for careers in the fundamentals of all environmental health and safety areas. Graduates are prepared to work in both public and private settings.    In the public setting, graduates may find employment in state and local public health departments with the responsibility for protection of ground and surface water quality, food safety, public swimming pool safety, solid waste management and the control of insect and rodent pests.   In the private sector, graduates may find employment in industry and consulting firms where they have the responsibility for assuring that chemicals are managed, handled, stored and used in a manner that minimizes worker exposure throughout their lifetime, protecting workers from workplace hazards, air sampling, noise monitoring, ergonomic evaluations, selection of personal protective equipment, and respirator fit testing. They may also be responsible for protecting workers from hazards such as confined space entry, machine lockout/tagout, fire protection, and mechanical safety in compliance with federal, state and local requirements. The overall goal of the Environmental Health and Safety Management Program is protecting human health and the environment.

The Evironmental Health and Safety Management Program at Ferris is accredited by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC). It is the only EHAC accredited program in Michigan.

Courses are offered both on the Big Rapids Campus and on the campus of Delta College. The courses that are offered at Delta College are offered on the weekends to accommodate the schedules of working adults.   Several program courses are offered on-line.
