Introduction to American Studies *C

A survey of American thought and artistic achievements from the Puritans in the 1600s to the present. Through the study of American literature, art, music, and film, we will explore the traditionally American notion of Individualism, the Puritan "sense of mission," and the American belief in self-improvement, as well as the impact of industrialization, pragmatism, mass society, and the Harlem Renaissance and the counter-culture. Course will examine the cultural and literary contributions of both the dominant white culture and the contributions of women and minorities.
