History of Rhetoric & Style (ENGL 380)

The problems of editing and revising written texts through the study of style. Students begin studying contemporary editing practices. They examine the changes in correctness, eloquence, and theories of rhetoric from Aristotle to current theorists. Using samples of written (English) texts, primarily scientific and technical writing, students examine their assumptions of "good style" and consider the importance of rhetorical concerns: appropriateness, audience awareness, and stylistic choices. Prerequisites ENGL 311 or ENG 321
