Why Choose Pre-Mortuary Science?

This program is designed in accordance with the Mortuary Science program at Wayne State University, which is the only institution in Michigan that prepares students for State certification in mortuary science. Because entrance into the WSU program is competitive, a minimum requirement for application is completion of at least 68 credit hours with a grade of 'C' or better as outlined in the WSU graduate bulletin. State of Michigan Mortuary Licensure requires a minimum of eight credits of 100-level or higher chemistry.

The duties and responsibilities of a funeral director are extremely varied. They may include counseling, proper completion of death certificates and preparation of the body for burial.

After the funeral service, the director may assist the family for several months in filing necessary claims for Social Security, insurance, etc., until all details are satisfactorily completed.

Admission Requirements

First year student admission is open to high school graduates (or equivalent) who demonstrate academic preparedness, maturity and seriousness of purpose with educational backgrounds appropriate to their chosen program of study. High school courses and grade point average, ACT composite score, and ACT reading and mathematics subscores will be considered in the admission and placement process. Transfer students must have at least 12 credits at the time of application with a minimum 2.0 overall GPA including an English and mathematics course, or they must provide their high school records and ACT scores for admission review.

Graduation Requirements

The Pre-Mortuary Science program at Ferris leads to an associate in science degree. Graduation requires a minimum 2.0 GPA overall. Students must complete a minimum of 60 credits including all general education requirements as outlined on the General Education website and complete a 20-credit concentration of Scientific Understanding and mathematics course work.
