Why Choose Accountancy?

An accounting education can lead to a highly respected and rewarding career. Accountants routinely earn incomes that are in the top 5 percent of the community in which they may live. If you elect to major in accounting, you may prepare yourself for a variety of accounting careers in industry, government, not-for-profit organizations, and public accounting. Many accountants are self-employed, operating their own business.

The Accountancy program at Ferris State integrates a liberal arts foundation with a professional field of study. The emphasis is on applied, hands-on training, including internships that prepare the student to step into a job immediately upon graduation. Because of this, Ferris graduates are readily able to apply what they have learned in the "real world", giving them an advantage over graduates from other universities.

Why Choose Accountancy with MBA?

Michigan and most other states require 150 hours of university course work to be licensed as a Certified Public Accountant. Junior year Bachelor of Science in Accountancy program majors may apply for fourth year dual enrollment in Accountancy and MBA. By adding the MBA to the existing CPA baccalaureate program as a fifth year, students interested in entering the CPA profession will get the appropriate training in accounting, satisfy the 150 minimum credit hours required to practice as a licensed Certified Public Accountant, and earn a career enhancing graduate degree.

Our MBA is intended for individuals who are interested in acquiring the management skills required to meet the competitive challenges facing today's organizations. The MBA is founded on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award criteria for excellence and performance-metric-based management principles. Though relatively new, performance-metric-based management is already a widely adopted, systems-approach to managing and leading organizations.

Admission Requirements

Applicants to Accountancy must present evidence of graduation from high school or the GED. To enter a Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) Program in Business, applicants are expected to meet two of the following: a minimum high school grade point average of 2.50 (on a 4.00 scale); ACT math score of 19 or higher; an ACT reading score of 19 or higher.

Applicants to Accountancy CPA-MBA must be approaching junior status with a 3.0 GPA or better and submit the following documents:

  • Completed application

  • Current resume

  • One page Writing Sample-Statement of Purpose

  • Three letters of recommendation

  • Graduation Requirements

The Bachelor of Science in Accountancy is awarded to those individuals who have completed the 124 required credit hours with a minimum 2.0 GPA in their core classes, in their major, and overall.
