Examines the theoretical and research bases for understanding reading and writing development and how children become literate. Explores the nature of language and how social, culture and environmental factors influence its development. Describes the stages of literacy development and how differences among learners influence their development. Provides an overview of current methodologies, research-based programs, and various models of assessment and instruction. Includes technology and classroom application components.
