| Maps are analyzed as tools for communication, social interaction, societal patterns, and individual perceptions of place. Map generalization and symbolization, continuous surface, data classification, and other cartographic theories are used to critically analyze expression of spatial phenomenon in the social sciences, the media, in politics, demographics, and history. Topographic and popular reference maps are studied using fundamental concepts of scale, projection, and measurement. Students use GIS to create thematic maps. This course meets General Education requirements: Social Awareness. |
