Colonial and 19th century Americans' struggle to define the nature and substance of our national identity; European intellectual thought and how the American experience served to transform and adapt those values and beliefs; religious, political, and social reform movements that defined the meaning of citizenship and community; and creative cultural expressions of American nationalism.
