Why the University College Program?The University College Program is a two-semester program that assists first-year students who are ineligible for direct admission into other Ferris programs. The purpose of the University College Program is to help students become successful in college and enable them to transfer into the Ferris State program of their choice. Placement tests, ACT scores and previous high school work determine the courses required to complete the program. University College Program courses at the 100 level or higher may be applied toward elective credits in other programs. The University College Program is a part of University College and features an opportunity for making a successful transition to college. Stringent class attendance and performance requirements are delineated in the UNCP Performance Contract which each UNCP student is required to sign. The CourseUNCP 100, University College Program class, is a three-credit hour class that guides you through the transition from high school to college. Our faculty help you explore the process through the use of self-assessment inventories, group discussion, individual projects, and assessments and consultation with Educational and Career counselors. Academic foundation courses you may be enrolled in for this program include are UNIV 101, CARE 102, READ 106, READ 176, ENGL 074 or MATH 010 as well as UNCP 100 and UNCP 101. The AdvisorAll UNCP students enroll in the University College Program courses – UNCP 100 and UNCP 101. The instructor of this weekly seminar is also your advisor, selected from the many faculty and professional staff who are very concerned about the student’s success in college. Academic Advisors can help you define and develop realistic goals, identify special needs, match the student to available resources, monitor progress toward educational and career goals, and discuss linkages between academic preparation and the world of work. Self-Evaluation OptionsYou have the opportunity to complete the College Student Inventory (CSI) which captures the student’s original impressions of the campus and provides advisors with useful advising information. You will also have the opportunity to complete the Learning And Studies Strategies Inventory (LASSI) which is designed to help you develop or expand on how to study and learn so you can be more successful in college. The greatest benefit from completing the LASSI is that it will help you to identify areas of your knowledge, skills, motivation and attitudes you may wish to improve.
