Purpose Statement
Providing students with on-going feedback related to academic performance alerts students to deficiencies in meeting instructor expectations. Assigning mid-term grades is one mechanism for achieving the goal of improving academic success and allowing students to make informed decisions regarding future course planning. The following policy has been adopted to assist the University in improving student success.
Policy
Students have a reasonable expectation of knowing their current grade throughout the semester. Faculty are encouraged to assign and enter mid-term grades in the official grade keeping platform (Banner) for all students, but especially students in 100 and 200 level classes. Mid-term grades are for information-only and are not recorded on the student’s official transcript. All faculty should include their policy on mid-term grades in all course syllabi. If the instructional strategies and learning outcomes are such that it is not possible to assign a mid-term grade, the syllabus should state that and indicate how the student will be apprised of their progress throughout the course. If a mid-term grade is given, the syllabus should outline the process/assignments that will determine the midterm grade.
Audience
The intended audience for this policy is faculty.
Definitions
Mid-term grades: An information-only grade that is provided to the student near the half point of the semester before the withdrawal deadline and entered into the official grade keeping platform. It is intended to inform the student and the student’s academic advisor of the student’s academic progress.
