SCWK 130 - Soc Work Interviewing Skills 1


This course will introduce the various types, purposes and stages of introductory social work interviewing and assessment. Skills described and taught in this course include basic empathy, observation, listening and beginning assessment writing skills. Students will also be exposed to non-verbal communications, rapport building, information giving and information gathering through various interviewing and assessment techniques. The topics of professionalism, ADEI practices, social justice and ethical decision making will also be discussed in the context of conducting thorough social work interviews and assessments. This is a lab course, students should expect weekly in-class demonstration, practice and faculty feedback regarding skill technique. Typically offered Fall, Spring.
