Course explores popular expressions of American culture and leisure time pursuits during the 1800s. The course examines consumer tastes among working class Americans and recent immigrants to America, trends in urban recreation activities, and the emergence of a national identity. How popular culture reflects concerns of race, ethnicity and gender will be addressed. This course meets General Education requirements: Cultural Enrichment and new Fall 2017 Culture.
