SPAN 224 - Spanish for Heritage Speakers

A Spanish heritage speaker is an individual who has grown up with family members who speak some Spanish to them but does not live in a Spanish-speaking country and has had little to no formal education in Spanish. The purpose of this course is to build upon the language knowledge that students bring to the class and advance their proficiency of Spanish for multiple contexts. Special attention is given to building vocabulary, acquiring, and effectively using learning strategies, and strengthening reading and writing skills in Spanish. Cultural projects and readings will reinforce learners' understanding of the multiple issues related to Hispanic cultures in the US. Throughout the semester, students will read, write, discuss, and explore the cultures and traditions of their Hispanic heritage experience. This course meets General Education requirements: Global Consciousness; Cultural Enrichment and new Fall 2017 Global Diversity and Culture.
