SPAN 431 - Spanish for Health Professions


This course is designed for students in the medical field (nursing, dental hygiene, optometry, pharmacy, etc.) who want to develop language-specific skills in this area. It provides specific training to improve linguistic competence in Spanish from the basic interaction with a patient to specialized medical terminology. It will help students to understand about the different cultural values and cultural beliefs relevant to health care, as well as information on medical conditions and concerns affecting the Spanish speaking community in the US. The course will incorporate a variety of learning strategies, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities, discussions, presentations, role-plays to specific medical areas, and translation and interpretation activities. This course meets General Education requirements Cultural Enrichment and Global Consciousness and new Fall 2017 Culture and Global Diversity. Typically offered in Fall, Spring
