SPAN 433 - Translation and Interpretation

This course is designed to be an introduction to the theory and practice of translating and interpreting, from Spanish to English, and vice versa. This course will cover theory, ethics, logistics, and real-world examples of translation and interpretation. Along with a theoretical background in the field, students will develop essential skills and learn about best practices to improve their Spanish linguistic and cultural competencies in specific contexts (e.g., healthcare, business, and social and legal services, outreach programs) for Spanish-speaking communities at the local, regional, national, and international levels. This course includes lecture, group discussion, role-playing activities, small group projects, student presentations, a final mock interpretation for an industry-specific purpose, and a portfolio comprised of translation samples and other materials demonstrating linguistic and intercultural competencies. This course meets General Education requirement for Culture Competency.
