Undergraduate Certificate

The advanced certificate in Geographic Information System (GIS) will go into more spatial analysis than the regular certificate. The GIS industry is an expanding sector in the global economy. The tools required in the field have become increasingly complex, prompting a large demand for individuals with formal advanced training in GIS. Students learn how to: acquire geospatial information from a variety of sources, interpret, use and manage geospatial data for a given purpose, and how to use geographic information system software for storage, manipulation, and analysis of geospatial data.

Program Outcomes

  1. Be able to describe the fundamental concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including spatial data types and attribute data.
  2. Be able to identify the sources, accuracy, scales, advantages, and the scope of the spatial data.
  3. Be able to analyze different data models such as raster, vector, data entry and editing.
  4. Be able to categorize the concepts of spatial analysis, terrain analysis, and their applications such as in homeland security.
  5. Be able to discuss the advanced topics, such as spatial models, web Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geospatial Mashups, Mobile Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geoportals, National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI), and applications in e-government.
