Master of Science in Career and Technical Education
Improved career and technical education competency and refined instructional skills are the goals of Ferris State University’s Master of Science degree program in Career and Technical education. This program enables career and technical instructors in allied health, business, home economics and technical education at secondary and post-secondary levels, as well as industrial training and development personnel, to attain an advanced education by building on previous training and occupational experience. Students eligible for admission to the graduate program must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. When required, candidates should hold or be eligible for professional licensure, registration or certification to practice in the occupational specialty. Previous teaching experience is not a requirement. An admissions committee will review all application materials and recommend appropriate action. Upon admission to the graduate program, each student will be assigned a graduate advisor.

Program Outcomes
- Students will demonstrate ability to design a project and integrate scholarship in their specific area of inquiry within Career and Technical Education (CTE) or their work-based field.
- Students will use technology to support decision making, communication, training and instruction, and learning.
- Students will utilize data to make decisions on project need, design, implementation, and evaluation for education and training.
- Students program will demonstrate competence in the application of foundations of education research through scholarly and technical writing, learning analytics, and project design and implementation.
- Student will develop a critical understanding of the legal, social, and political influences upon their respective fields.
- Students will integrate the latest technology in their respective fields to enhance learning and increase productivity.
- Students will demonstrate understanding of cultural competency and diverse learner needs in response to the ever-changing global society.
- Students will design and evaluate instructional programs using best practices in their respective fields.
- Students will demonstrate expertise in their chosen field through research, development, and applied projects.
New Student Admission Requirements
- Completed application for admission.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a 3.00 or higher GPA (on a 4.00 scale)
- Submit official transcripts from all institutions of higher education previously attended. Ferris graduates need not submit transcripts for coursework completed at Ferris.
- Submit a current, professional resume or curriculum vitae.
- Submit a statement of purpose explaining why you are interested in this degree
- Request three (3) professional references from individuals familiar with academic or professional backgrounds and can provide an assessment of the applicant’s current work quality and ability to complete graduate education successfully.
- International students whose first (native) language is not English need to have English proficiency test scores sent directly from the testing agency to demonstrate meeting the Ferris standards for English proficiency (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo).
- Provisional entry may be granted when the 3.00 GPA (on a 4.00 scale) requirement is not met. Once the student is granted provisional entry, they must earn a 3.00 GPA (on a 4.00 scale) within the first nine (9) hours of graduate-level courses.
These requirements also apply to Transfer Students.

Education Subject Area Electives - 12 Credits Required
A maximum of 6 of the required 12 elective credits may be taken at the graduate level in your major, minor, or related field. Consult your Education and Subject Area advisors for recommended courses. Notes
- Students who return to the university after an interrupted enrollment, not including summer semester, must normally meet the requirements of the curriculum which are in effect at the time of their return, not the requirements which were in effect when they were originally admitted.
- Though faculty advisors are responsible for advising students regarding degree requirement, it is the student who is ultimately responsible for choosing the correct courses and for following the correct program.
- Formatting for theses, projects, or policy papers must follow university procedures found on the: Graduate Programs Policies Webpage.
- The following courses are required for the Advanced Graduate Certificate in Highly Effective Career and Technical Education Instructional Leadership (HEIL-CT): EDUC 508, ECTE 608, and EDUC 560.
- The following courses are required for the Michigan Department of Education Standard Teaching Certificate: ECTE 520, ECTE 525, EDUC 502, and EDUC 508.
- Credit Variance - Credits required may vary based on course placement, prerequisites, etc. If you have questions, contact your advisor.
Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate from Ferris State University, students must meet both University and Programmatic Graduation Requirements.
University Graduation Requirements
These are the minimum graduation requirements for a graduate degree at Ferris State University:
- A minimum of 30 credits must be earned.
- A 3.00 or higher cumulative Ferris State University GPA in graduate courses is required.
- A minimum grade of C or higher must be earned in each course with no more than two grades of C.
- A minimum of 70 percent of the degree requirements must be earned from Ferris State University to meet the Residency requirement.
- No more than 20 percent of required hours can be thesis credits.
- No more than 6 hours can be independent study and/or special topics.
- Degree requirements shall be completed within 5 years from first enrollment in a graduate course following admission.
- Each student must complete a thesis, graduate project, policy paper, internship, comprehensive examination, or additional course work.
Programmatic Graduation Requirements
These are the additional graduation requirements mandated by the program:
- All requirements as specified in the All Major Requirements section must be met.
