Doctorate of Education

The Doctorate in Community College Leadership program, designed for emerging leaders in community colleges, is unique in its cohort model, blended delivery method, and focus on application grounded in theory. Courses are taught by community college leaders from across the country and examine the community college structure using real institutional issues, data, and research. Students begin working on their dissertations at the beginning of the program, aimed at program completion within 3 years. A practicum experience also gives students the opportunity to work on an individually designed project or participate in an international examination of educational practices.

Admission Requirements


New Student Admission Requirements


  • An earned master’s or other graduate degrees (J.D., Ed.S., etc.) from a regionally accredited university with an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 or better on a 4-point scale (some exceptions may be made for particularly rigorous programs or special circumstances)
  • Submit your official college transcripts from your highest degree. Ferris graduates need not submit transcripts for coursework completed at Ferris.
  • Submit a current, professional resume or curriculum vitae.
  • Submit essay questions responses.
  • Submit at least two and no more than three writing samples that reflect different professional writing audiences and document types

Application Deadline: October 31 for Spring Semester and April 19 for Summer Semester. The admissions committee may request a personal interview in instances where the program has reached enrollment capacity. Transfer credits may be accepted toward the Doctorate in Community College Leadership in some circumstances. The maximum number of credits to be accepted for transfer will be eighteen (18). All dissertation credits must be earned through Ferris State University. The following conditions must be met for transfer credits to be considered:

  • The credits must have been earned after awarding of master’s degree.
  • Credits must be for graduate-level courses from a regionally accredited university with a grade of B or better.
  • Credits must have been earned within the five years prior to admission to Ferris’ DCCL program.
  • Credits must have been earned in areas relevant to the requirements for the Doctorate in Community College Leadership, such as leadership or research.

Notes


  • Students who return to the university after an interrupted enrollment, not including summer semester, must normally meet the requirements of the curriculum which are in effect at the time of their return, not the requirements which were in effect when they were originally admitted.
  • Credit Variance - Credits required may vary based on course placement, prerequisites, etc. If you have questions, contact your advisor.

Graduation Requirements


In order to graduate from Ferris State University, students must meet both University and Programmatic Graduation Requirements.

University Graduation Requirements


These are the minimum graduation requirements for a graduate degree at Ferris State University:

  • A minimum of 30 credits must be earned.
  • A 3.00 or higher cumulative Ferris State University GPA in graduate courses is required.
  • A minimum grade of C or higher must be earned in each course with no more than two grades of C.
  • A minimum of 70 percent of the degree requirements must be earned from Ferris State University to meet the Residency requirement.
  • No more than 20 percent of required hours can be thesis credits.
  • No more than 6 hours can be independent study and/or special topics.
  • Degree requirements shall be completed within 5 years from first enrollment in a graduate course following admission.
  • Each student must complete a thesis, graduate project, policy paper, internship, comprehensive examination, or additional course work.

Programmatic Graduation Requirements


These are the additional graduation requirements mandated by the program:

  • All requirements as specified in the All Major Requirements section must be met.
  • A minimum grade of B- or higher must be earned in each course.
  • Complete and successfully defend a dissertation within the degree time limit.
  • Submit the completed dissertation according to current University, FLITE, and program policies.
  • Successfully complete all aspects of the Comprehensive Interviews and Presentations (CIPs).
  • Be a student in good standing.
