Master of Science in Criminal Justice
The Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration is designed to offer post-baccalaureate education to criminal justice professionals, administrators and traditional students seeking criminal justice graduate education. The curriculum offers coursework and skills necessary for successful administration in police, corrections and court agencies, as well as private criminal justice agencies; such as residential treatment centers, halfway houses and private security firms. Students seeking admission to law school and doctoral studies in criminal justice will find this program appealing.

Program Outcomes
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the criminal justice system and its relationship to society.
- Demonstrate advanced, in-depth knowledge of the nature of crime and current policy issues.
- Develop understanding of research methods, program evaluations, and grant writing and its application for agencies.
- Demonstrate the development or enhancement of administrative skills necessary for supervisory positions and an awareness of governmental issues and accountability.
- Enhance both written and oral communication skills.
New Student Admission Requirements
- Completed application for admission.
- Request official transcript confirming a four-year bachelor’s degree has been earned from a regionally accredited college or university demonstrating a 3.00 or higher GPA (on a 4.00 scale). Ferris graduates need not submit transcripts for coursework completed at Ferris.
- Submit a current, professional resume or curriculum vitae.
- Submit a 500-word (2 pages double-spaced) personal statement indicating why you are interested in pursuing the master’s degree at Ferris.
- Request three (3) professional references from faculty or agency employers.
- International students whose first (native) language is not English need to have English proficiency test scores sent directly from the testing agency to demonstrate meeting the Ferris standards for English proficiency (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo).
- Provisional admission may be granted if an applicant does not meet all the admission requirements. If provisional admission is granted, the applicant must successfully complete nine (9) credit hours of graduate-level coursework with a 3.00 GPA (on a 4.00 scale) and correct all deficiencies in their admission requirements.
These requirements also apply to transfer students.

Administration - 9 Credits Required
Culminating Experience - 6 Credits Required
Notes
- Students who return to the university after an interrupted enrollment, not including summer semester, must normally meet the requirements of the curriculum which are in effect at the time of their return, not the requirements which were in effect when they were originally admitted.
- CRIM 660 is offered during the summer semester each year. If a student does not complete their work by the end of the summer, an IP (In Progress) grade will be given until the work is completed. Each semester after the summer semester the student must register for 1 credit of CRIM 697 until the final work is approved.
- Credit Variance - Credits required may vary based on course placement, prerequisites, etc. If you have questions, contact your advisor.
Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate from Ferris State University, students must meet both University and Programmatic Graduation Requirements.
University Graduation Requirements
These are the minimum graduation requirements for a graduate degree at Ferris State University:
- A minimum of 30 credits must be earned.
- A 3.00 or higher cumulative Ferris State University GPA in graduate courses is required.
- A minimum grade of C or higher must be earned in each course with no more than two grades of C.
- A minimum of 70 percent of the degree requirements must be earned from Ferris State University to meet the Residency requirement.
- No more than 20 percent of required hours can be thesis credits.
- No more than 6 hours can be independent study and/or special topics.
- Degree requirements shall be completed within 5 years from first enrollment in a graduate course following admission.
- Each student must complete a thesis, graduate project, policy paper, internship, comprehensive examination, or additional course work.
Programmatic Graduation Requirements
These are the additional graduation requirements mandated by the program:
- All requirements as specified in the All Major Requirements section must be met.
- No more than 6 credits of the degree requirements may be transferred from another accredited graduate program in Criminal Justice.
- A minimum grade of C or higher must be earned in each course with no more than one grade of C. All work below a C must be repeated to fulfill graduate requirements. Upon any second grade C+ or below, the student may be allowed to repeat one course or may be removed from enrollment.
