Master of Education

The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction Subject Area Concentration gives professional educators the advanced professional development necessary to open several career options as well as providing a foundation to improve their instructional practice. Students complete advanced core course work in addition will focus in a subject of ther choosing. Students eligible for admission to the graduate program must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. When required, candidates should hold or be eligible for professional licensure, registration or certification to practice in the occupational specialty. Previous teaching experience is not a requirement. An admissions committee will review all application materials and recommend appropriate action. Upon admission to the graduate program, each student will be assigned a graduate advisor.

Admission Requirements

New Student Admission Requirements

Completed application for admission.
Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a 3.00 or higher GPA (on a 4.00 scale)
Submit official transcripts from all institutions of higher education previously attended. Ferris graduates need not submit transcripts for coursework completed at Ferris.
Submit a current, professional resume or curriculum vitae.
Submit a statement of purpose explaining why you are interested in this degree
Request three (3) professional references from individuals familiar with academic or professional backgrounds and can provide an assessment of the applicant’s current work quality and ability to complete graduate education successfully.
International students whose first (native) language is not English need to have English proficiency test scores sent directly from the testing agency to demonstrate meeting the Ferris standards for English proficiency (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo).
Provisional entry may be granted when the 3.00 GPA (on a 4.00 scale) requirement is not met. Once the student is granted provisional entry, they must earn a 3.00 GPA (on a 4.00 scale) within the first nine (9) hours of graduate-level courses.

Students who return to the university after an interrupted enrollment, not including summer semester, must normally meet the requirements of the curriculum which are in effect at the time of their return, not the requirements which were in effect when they were originally admitted.
Though faculty advisors are responsible for advising students regarding degree requirement, it is the student who is ultimately responsible for choosing the correct courses and for following the correct program.

Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate from Ferris State University, students must meet both University and Programmatic Graduation Requirements.

University Graduation Requirements

These are the minimum graduation requirements for a graduate degree at Ferris State University:

A minimum of 30 credits must be earned.
A 3.00 or higher cumulative Ferris State University GPA in graduate courses is required.
A minimum grade of C or higher must be earned in each course with no more than two grades of C.
A minimum of 70 percent of the degree requirements must be earned from Ferris State University to meet the Residency requirement.
No more than 20 percent of required hours can be thesis credits.
No more than 6 hours can be independent study and/or special topics.
Degree requirements shall be completed within 5 years from first enrollment in a graduate course following admission.
Each student must complete a thesis, graduate project, policy paper, internship, comprehensive examination, or additional course work.
