Associate of Fine Arts

The AFA in Design Studies at Kendall College of Art and Design is a two-year program that prepares students for continuing study toward professional baccalaureate degrees in design. The student will participate in a shared first-year experience of foundation courses, then be introduced to study in a design discipline of their choice for the second year. The primary curriculum focus is on the process of design while developing knowledge and skills for generating ideas as well as to function both independently and as part of a team.

New Student Admission Requirements


  • 2.50 High School GPA (on a 4.00 scale)
  • Students with a lower GPA are still encouraged to apply.
  • While a portfolio is required for admission to KCAD bachelor’s degree programs, you do NOT need to submit a portfolio when applying to our associate degree programs.

  • 2.50 College GPA (on a 4.00 scale)

Graduation Requirements


  • Complete 60 semester credit hours.
  • Complete a studio major program of study (at least half of the major credits must be in residence at KCAD).
  • Complete all Supportive, Art History and General Education requirements.
  • Complete a minimum of 15 semester hours in residence at KCAD.
  • Earn a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher, and a minimum GPA of 2.25 in the major studio core (studio electives exempted).
  • Submit a digital image of work.
  • Be in good standing with the College.
