Health Information Management (HIM-BS), B.S.

Bachelor of Science

Individuals with an interest in computers, health care and business will find that health information management is a challenging and fulfilling career option. At the end of the program, the student is eligible to apply to write the national certification examination to earn the designation of Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).

The Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

Program Outcomes


  1. Graduates will communicate effectively to acquire, develop, and convey ideas and information to diverse populations.
  2. Graduates will apply previously learned knowledge to new problems.
  3. Graduates will demonstrate professional and ethical behaviors.
  4. Graduates will apply the knowledge and professional competencies to practice as entry-level Health Information Administrators.
  5. The program will meet the standards for specialized accreditation established by Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM).

Admission Requirements


New Student Admission Requirements


  • 2.70 High School GPA (on a 4.00 scale) (2.50 -2.69 with college approval)
  • Minimum Composite Score of ACT 18/SAT 950 OR 3.0 High School GPA (on a 4.00 scale) and Composite ACT 17/SAT 900

Transfer Student Admission Requirements


  • Combined college or university GPA of 2.50 (on a 4.00 scale) from all institutions attended.
  • Complete all course requirements necessary to complete the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Health Information Technology program at Ferris State University or related Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree.
  • Transfer equivalency for Ferris State University’s ENGL 150  or placement during the first semester at Ferris State University which would require an English ACT score of 16 or higher; or ERW SAT score of 450 or higher; or English Accuplacer score of 6 or higher.
  • Transfer equivalency for Ferris State University’s MATH 115  or placement during the first semester at Ferris State University which would require a Math ACT score of 19 or higher; Math SAT of 500 or higher; or Math Accuplacer scores: Elementary Algebra score 75 or higher and College Level Math 0 to 49.

University Requirements - 39 to 40 Credits Required


First Year Seminar Requirement (FSUS 100 or Equivalent) - 0 to 1 Credit Required

University General Education Requirements - 39 Credits Required

Communication Competency - 12 Credits Required (or Their Equivalent)


Quantitative Literacy Competency - 3 Credits Required (or Their Equivalent)

  • Any MATH Course Higher Than MATH 115 ; Consult Advisor for Exceptions
  • Official Pre-2016 Math SAT Score of 560 or Higher
  • Official Post-2016 Math SAT Score of 580 or Higher
  • Official Math ACT Score of 24 or Higher

Natural Sciences Competency - 6 Credits Required


Two courses are required with a minimum of 6 credits: must have at least one lab course.

Culture Competency - 9 Credits Required


Three courses are required with a minimum of 9 credits: must be from two different disciplines and have at least one 200 level or higher course.

Self and Society Competency - 9 Credits Required


Three courses are required with a minimum of 9 credits: must be from two different disciplines, have at least one 200 level or higher course, and at least one Self and Society Foundation course.

United States (U.S.) Diversity Competency - 1 Course Required


If not met by courses taken for Culture Competency, Self and Society Competency, or Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA), a student must have one course with the United States (U.S.) Diversity attribute. Some courses include both Global and United States (U.S.) Diversity attributes.

Global Diversity Competency - 1 Course Required


If not met by courses taken for Culture Competency, Self and Society Competency, or Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA), a student must have one course with the Global Diversity attribute. Some courses include both Global and United States (U.S.) Diversity attributes.

Collaboration Competency - Courses Required Met in College Requirements


If not met by courses taken in the College Requirements section, a student must have two courses with the Collaboration attribute. Some courses include both Collaboration and Problem Solving attributes.

Problem Solving Competency - Courses Required Met in College Requirements


If not met by courses taken in the College Requirements section, a student must have two courses with the Problem Solving attribute. Some courses include both Collaboration and Problem Solving attributes.

College Requirements - 85 Credits Required


College of Health Professions (COHP) Core Curriculum - 10 Credits Required


COHP 101  and COHP 102  can be met with a Registered Nurse (RN) license.

Notes


  • Students who return to the university after an interrupted enrollment, not including summer semester, must normally meet the requirements of the curriculum which are in effect at the time of their return, not the requirements which were in effect when they were originally admitted.
  • Prior to taking MRIS 293 , students must be enrolled in the Health Information Management (HIM) program and earn a grade of C or higher in the following courses: COHP 101 , COHP 102 , COMM 105  or COMM 221 , BIOL 109 , ENGL 150  (grade of C- or higher), ENGL 250 , ISYS 105 , MRIS 101 , MRIS 103 , MRIS 121 , MRIS 122 , MRIS 204 , MRIS 205 , MRIS 209 , MRIS 210 , MRIS 211 , MRIS 220 , MRIS 221 , and MRIS 345 . Students who earn a grade of less than a C in any of these courses will be required to repeat the course. Two unsuccessful attempts, less than C, in any MRIS or HCSA course will result in dismissal from the program.
  • Prior to taking MRIS 493 , students must earn a grade of C or higher in the following courses: MRIS 293 , ACCT 201 , MGMT 301 , COHP 350 , ENGL 321  or ENGL 325 , COHP 300 , HCSA 310 , HCSA 336 , MRIS 402 , COHP 450 , and HCSA 474 . Students who earn a grade of less than a C in any of these courses will be required to repeat the course. Two unsuccessful attempts, less than C, in any MRIS or HCSA course will result in dismissal from the program.

Graduation Requirements


In order to graduate from Ferris State University, students must meet both University and Programmatic Graduation Requirements.

University Graduation Requirements


These are the minimum graduation requirements for a bachelor’s degree at Ferris State University:

  • All requirements as specified in the University Requirements section must be met.
  • A minimum of 120 credits must be earned.
  • A 2.00 or higher cumulative Ferris State University GPA is required.
  • A minimum of 30 credits must be earned from Ferris State University to meet the Residency requirement.
  • A minimum of 40 credits of 300 level or higher courses must be earned.

Programmatic Graduation Requirements


These are the additional graduation requirements mandated by the program:

  • All requirements as specified in the College Requirements section must be met.
  • A 2.25 or higher cumulative Ferris State University GPA is required.
