Undergraduate Certificate

A Geographic Information System Certificate curriculum uses computers and software to leverage the fundamental principle of spatial data and informationmanagement. It is a tool used for managing information according to where it is located. There is currently a shortage of qualified professionals to fill GIS-related positions in diverse disciplines ranging from different levels of government to various private companies to large corporations. GIS is one of the mostimportant components of approaching global problem-solving. It helps us look for patterns in both the man-made and natural worlds. People in business,government, education, and natural resources are using GIS to analyze markets, manage parcels of land, conduct research, and protect natural resources.

Program Outcomes


  1. Be able to describe the fundamentals of spatial data including scale, accuracy, source of data, benefits, and limitations.
  2. Be able to identify the primary methods of data collection.
  3. Be able to summarize the limitations secondary sources of spatial data and the errors associated with them.
  4. Be able to describe the fundamental concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  5. Be able to critique the different capabilities and applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS); including the local governments and utility companies.

Admission Requirements


New Student Admission Requirements


  • Admitted to Ferris State University and in good academic standing.
  • Competency in ENGL 150  with minimum grade of C or higher or have permission from instructor.

These requirements also apply to Transfer Students.

Notes


  • Students who return to the university after an interrupted enrollment, not including summer semester, must normally meet the requirements of the curriculum which are in effect at the time of their return, not the requirements which were in effect when they were originally admitted.
  • Credit Variance - Credits required may vary based on course placement, prerequisites, etc. If you have questions, contact your advisor.

Graduation Requirements


In order to graduate from Ferris State University, students must meet both University and Programmatic Graduation Requirements.

University Graduation Requirements


These are the minimum graduation requirements for an undergraduate certificate at Ferris State University:

  • A GPA of 2.00 or higher must be achieved for the courses within the certificate.
  • A minimum of 6 credits within the certificate must be earned.
  • A minimum of 50 percent of certificate credits must be earned from Ferris State University to meet the Residency requirement.

Programmatic Graduation Requirements


These are the additional graduation requirements mandated by the program:

  • All requirements as specified in the All Certificate Requirements section must be met.
  • A minimum grade of C- must be earned in all certificate courses.
