Undergraduate Certificate

The sports industry has become a major player in the national and world economy. Beyond the obvious competition events involving players, coaches and spectators, the industry requires many support personnel to administer, market, and broadcast events. At every level of involvement, appropriate and effective communication is required. This certificate adds an additional endorsement in communication skills for anyone involved in the Sports industry at any level, from volunteer to professional.

Program Outcomes


  1. Students will describe the role of communication in the Sports industry. Participate in discussion, write short papers, and complete quizzes and exams.
  2. Students will apply communication skills valued in the Sports industry. Participate in individual and group projects resulting in written and oral reports.
  3. Students will analyze how sports are integral to American and global culture. Write research-based critical essays.
  4. Students will prepare for entry-level jobs in career fields in Sports-related organizations. Complete at least one course with a career-skills focus.

Admission Requirements


New Student Admission Requirements


  • Students must be admitted to Ferris State University; degree cannot be a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Applied Speech Communication or a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Sports Communication.

These requirements also apply to Transfer Students.

Notes


  • Students who return to the university after an interrupted enrollment, not including summer semester, must normally meet the requirements of the curriculum which are in effect at the time of their return, not the requirements which were in effect when they were originally admitted.
  • Credit Variance - Credits required may vary based on course placement, prerequisites, etc. If you have questions, contact your advisor.

Graduation Requirements


In order to graduate from Ferris State University, students must meet both University and Programmatic Graduation Requirements.

University Graduation Requirements


These are the minimum graduation requirements for an undergraduate certificate at Ferris State University:

  • A GPA of 2.00 or higher must be achieved for the courses within the certificate.
  • A minimum of 6 credits within the certificate must be earned.
  • A minimum of 50 percent of certificate credits must be earned from Ferris State University to meet the Residency requirement.

Programmatic Graduation Requirements


These are the additional graduation requirements mandated by the program:

  • All requirements as specified in the All Certificate Requirements section must be met.
