Master of Science in Nursing

The Master of Science in Nursing is a fully online program. There are three concentrations: nursing education, nursing informatics, and nursing administration. The program focuses on these concentrations to meet the complex needs of the health care delivery system that is currently experiencing a nurse educator shortage, as well as a growing need for nurses who are leaders in informatics and administration.

The Nursing MSN program at Ferris State University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.ccneaccreditation.org).

Admission Requirements


New Student Admission Requirements


  • Completed application for admission.
  • Hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree with an overall GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale).
  • Hold licensure as a Registered Nurse or eligibility.
  • Have clinical nursing experience; recommended two (2) years of experience.
  • Submit official transcripts from all institutions of higher education previously attended. Ferris graduates need not submit transcripts for coursework completed at Ferris.
  • Submit a current, professional resume or curriculum vitae.
  • Submit a 1-2-page letter of intent stating your professional goals and how the MSN program can assist you in meeting your goals. RN to MSN candidates may submit their RN to MSN Service-Learning synthesis paper.
  • Request two (2) professional references from individuals familiar with academic or professional backgrounds and can provide an assessment of the applicant’s current work quality and ability to complete graduate education successfully.
  • International students whose first (native) language is not English need to have English proficiency test scores sent directly from the testing agency to demonstrate meeting the Ferris standards for English proficiency (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo).

Provisional Admission may be granted in cases where selected admission criteria have not been demonstrated. The Graduate Program Coordinator will make recommendations to the Chair of the School of Nursing, whose approval is required. If provisional admission is granted, the student must complete nine (9) semester hours of graduate work with a 3.00 GPA (on a 4.00 scale) or clear any deficiencies to qualify for regular admission.
These requirements also apply to Transfer Students.

Integration of Knowledge - 10 Credits Required


Prior to enrolling in NURS 711  and NURS 712 , students must have taken all courses within the Nursing Core section, as well as taken all of the courses within their chosen concentration; see the Concentration section.

Nursing Education Concentration (NEDU) - 9 Credits Required


Nursing Administration Concentration (NADM) - 9 Credits Required


Nursing Informatics Concentration (NINF) - 9 Credits Required


Electives


Two electives are available as elective courses, but not required for completion of the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program. NURS 502  is a writing course for students who may want to improve skills in this area and prepare for publication in the future. NURS 602  is a statistics course intended to prepare students who may be planning to continue on for a doctoral degree, as a statistics course is often a requirement to enter these programs.

Notes


  • Students who return to the university after an interrupted enrollment, not including summer semester, must normally meet the requirements of the curriculum which are in effect at the time of their return, not the requirements which were in effect when they were originally admitted.
  • Students must pass the professional portfolio portion of NURS 792  in order to pass the course.
  • Credit Variance - Credits required may vary based on course placement, prerequisites, etc. If you have questions, contact your advisor.

Graduation Requirements


In order to graduate from Ferris State University, students must meet both University and Programmatic Graduation Requirements.

University Graduation Requirements


These are the minimum graduation requirements for a graduate degree at Ferris State University:

  • A minimum of 30 credits must be earned.
  • A 3.00 or higher cumulative Ferris State University GPA in graduate courses is required.
  • A minimum grade of C or higher must be earned in each course with no more than two grades of C.
  • A minimum of 70 percent of the degree requirements must be earned from Ferris State University to meet the Residency requirement.
  • No more than 20 percent of required hours can be thesis credits.
  • No more than 6 hours can be independent study and/or special topics.
  • Degree requirements shall be completed within 5 years from first enrollment in a graduate course following admission.
  • Each student must complete a thesis, graduate project, policy paper, internship, comprehensive examination, or additional course work.

Programmatic Graduation Requirements


These are the additional graduation requirements mandated by the program:

  • All requirements as specified in the All Major Requirements section must be met.
