EDLA 321 - Adv Foundations of Literacy for the 3-8 Teacher


This course provides an in-depth and integrated understanding of how literacy constructs develop across grades 3-8 (including foundational skills of print concepts and decoding, spelling, syntax, fluency,vocabulary, comprehension, composition, speaking and listening). Teacher candidates will also explore the role of formative and summative assessment in the literacy classroom, including how to use student evidence to set meaningful and appropriate literacy goals. Finally, teacher candidates will examine research-informed literacy practices and how to implement literacy instruction in a culturally responsive manner. An exploratory field component (15 hours) is included to develop skills related to instruction and assessment of literacy constructs.  Typically offered Fall and Spring only.
