EDLA 421 - Literacy Instruction and Assessment 3-8

This course integrates foundational content from prior coursework related to literacy development, instructional design, social emotional learning, and culturally responsive pedagogy. Teacher candidates will apply the process of backward design to create and implement culturally responsive literacy instruction for the 3-8 classroom in conjunction with a 30 hour field experience. To do so, candidates will learn how to use a variety of literacy assessments in individual and small group settings and analyze student evidence to construct integrated understandings about the literacy development of children. Teacher candidates will use these findings to implement culturally responsive literacy practices in individual and/or small group settings. Finally, candidates will provide feedback to students in relation to literacy growth and offer opportunities for students to apply feedback as essential elements of the instructional design process.
