Dental Hygiene (DHYG-AAS), A.A.S.

Associate of Applied Science

Successful completion of the program leads to an Associate in Applied Science degree and grants you eligibility to take the licensing examinations necessary to practice dental hygiene. The dental hygiene program is a three-year program, the first year is the pre-professional year, the second and third years are devoted to the dental hygiene professional courses. The Dental Hygiene degree program at Ferris State is the largest in the State of Michigan and one of the largest Dental Hygiene AAS degree programs in the nation. Our dental hygiene degree program enjoys a reputation of educational excellence, with expert faculty who are recognized at the state, national and international levels within the discipline of dental hygiene for the delivery of innovative academic and continuing education. Completion of the three-year associate in applied science degree, and final written and clinical exams enables the graduate to sit for the state licensure exam. Student clinical experiences occur within the college as the students work with patients from the University, community, and local schools in the College’s on campus Dental Hygiene Clinic.

The Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene is accredited by the American Dental Assoication Commision on Dental Accreditation (CODA).

Program Outcomes


  1. Graduates will utilize evidenced-based knowledge to provide comprehensive dental hygiene care.
  2. Graduates will communicate effectively to acquire, develop, and convey ideas and information to diverse populations.
  3. Graduates will adhere to the American Dental Hygiene Association Code of Ethics for the dental hygiene profession.
  4. The program will continue to meet the standards of the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) to maintain specialized accreditation.

Admission Requirements


New Student Admission Requirements


  • 2.70 High School GPA (on a 4.00 scale) (2.50 -2.69 with college approval)
  • Minimum Composite Score of ACT 18/SAT 950 OR 3.0 High School GPA (on a 4.00 scale) and Composite ACT 17/SAT 900

Transfer Student Admission Requirements


  • 2.00 GPA (on a 4.00 scale)

University Requirements - 34 to 36 Credits Required


First Year Seminar Requirement (FSUS 100 or Equivalent) - 0 to 1 Credit Required


All First-Time-In-Any-College Freshmen (FTIACs) must complete a one-credit FSUS 100  course, or its equivalent. Additional information and the definition of FTIAC for FSUS purposes can be found in the: Ferris State University Academic Affairs FSUS Policy

University General Education Requirements - 34 to 35 Credits Required


Courses in this section are required to satisfy the University General Education Requirements for an associate degree. The University General Education requirements can be found on the: Ferris State University General Education Requirements Webpage

Communication Competency - 6 Credits Required (or Their Equivalent)


Quantitative Literacy Competency - 3 to 4 Credits Required (or Their Equivalent)


Natural Sciences Competency - 3 Credits Required


One course is required with a minimum of 3 credits: must be a lab course.

Self and Society Competency - 3 Credits Required


Additional General Education Requirements - 16 Credits Required


These courses are additional General Education courses to meet the requirements for this specific program.

College Requirements - 51 to 53 Credits Required


Qualifying Courses - Credits Required Met in University General Education Requirements or College of Health Professions (COHP) Core Curriculum


These are qualifying courses for entry into the Dental Hygiene (DHYG) major and are used to meet some University General Education Requirements and College of Health Professions (COHP) Core Curriculum requirements. Students must obtain a grade of C or higher in all courses within this section.

College of Health Professions (COHP) Core Curriculum - 5 Credits Required

  • Students who return to the university after an interrupted enrollment, not including summer semester, must normally meet the requirements of the curriculum which are in effect at the time of their return, not the requirements which were in effect when they were originally admitted.

  • Students must obtain a grade of C or higher in the following courses, or their equivalent: BIOL 108 , BIOL 251 , BIOL 252 , CHEM 114 , COHP 100 , COHP 102 , COMM 105  or COMM 221 , ENGL 150 , MATH 110  or Minimum Math ACT 19, PSYC 150 , SOCY 121 , and a Culture Competency elective course.
  • All Mathematics (MATH), Biology (BIOL), and Chemistry (CHEM) courses must meet the above requirements within two attempts. A withdrawal, W grade, counts as an attempt.

Graduation Requirements


In order to graduate from Ferris State University, students must meet both University and Programmatic Graduation Requirements.

University Graduation Requirements


These are the minimum graduation requirements for an associate degree at Ferris State University:

  • All requirements as specified in the University Requirements section must be met.
  • A minimum of 60 credits must be earned.
  • A 2.00 or higher cumulative Ferris State University GPA is required.
  • A minimum of 15 credits must be earned from Ferris State University to meet the Residency requirement.

Programmatic Graduation Requirements


These are the additional graduation requirements mandated by the program:

  • All requirements as specified in the College Requirements section must be met.
  • A 2.50 or higher cumulative Ferris State University GPA is required.
  • A minimum grade of C must be earned in all courses; except ENGL 150  which requires a grade of C- or higher.
