Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS-AAS), A.A.S.

Associate of Applied Science

Sonographers are taught to work independently and to operate highly technical ultrasound equipment to acquire sonographic images. Diagnostic Medical Sonographers use high frequency sound waves to produce images and data that assist health care professionals diagnose various disease and disease processes. Physicians depend on the sonographer’s assistance with interpretation of the images to evaluate many body parts and structures, especially of the abdomen and pelvis. Graduates of the program are eligible to write the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) Sonography Principles and Instrumentation Examination as well as the Abdomen, and Obstetrics and Gynecology specialty exams.

The Associate in Applied Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP).

Program Outcomes


  1. Graduates will utilize knowledge and clinical competencies to provide current, comprehensive diagnostic medical sonography.
  2. Graduates will be competent entry level practicing sonographers.
  3. Graduates will communicate effectively to acquire, develop, and convey ideas in diagnostic medical sonography.
  4. Graduates will practice adhering to the ethical, legal, and professional standards of a diagnostic medical sonographer.
  5. Graduates will evaluate and interpret ultrasound images using critical thinking skills.

Admission Requirements


New Student Admission Requirements


  • 2.70 High School GPA (on a 4.00 scale) (2.50 -2.69 with college approval)
  • Minimum Composite Score of ACT 18/SAT 950 OR 3.0 High School GPA (on a 4.00 scale) and Composite ACT 17/SAT 900

Transfer Student Admission Requirements


  • 2.00 GPA (on a 4.00 scale)

Admission Requirements to the Professional Sequence


  • Obtain a grade of B- or higher in the following courses: BIOL 109 , MATH 115 , and PHYS 130 
  • Obtain a grade of C or higher in the following course: COHP 100 
  • Obtain a grade of C- or higher in the following course: ENGL 150  All MATH, BIOL, and CHEM courses must meet the above requirements within two attempts. A withdrawal, W grade, counts as an attempt.
  • Application Accepted: February 1st - 15th prior to fall semester requested.

University Requirements - 26 to 28 Credits Required


First Year Seminar Requirement (FSUS 100 or Equivalent) - 0 to 1 Credits Required

University General Education Requirements - 26 to 27 Credits Required

Quantitative Literacy Competency - 3 to 4 Credits Required (or Their Equivalent)


Natural Sciences Competency - 4 Credits Required


One course is required with a minimum of 3 credits: must be a lab course.

These courses are qualifying courses for entry into the Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) major and are used to meet some University General Education Requirements and College of Health Professions (COHP) Core Curriculum requirements.

College of Health Professions (COHP) Core Curriculum - 5 Credits Required

  • Students who return to the university after an interrupted enrollment, not including summer semester, must normally meet the requirements of the curriculum which are in effect at the time of their return, not the requirements which were in effect when they were originally admitted.

Graduation Requirements


In order to graduate from Ferris State University, students must meet both University and Programmatic Graduation Requirements.

University Graduation Requirements


These are the minimum graduation requirements for an associate degree at Ferris State University:

  • All requirements as specified in the University Requirements section must be met.
  • A minimum of 60 credits must be earned.
  • A 2.00 or higher cumulative Ferris State University GPA is required.
  • A minimum of 15 credits must be earned from Ferris State University to meet the Residency requirement.

Programmatic Graduation Requirements


These are the additional graduation requirements mandated by the program:

  • All requirements as specified in the College Requirements section must be met.
  • A minimum grade of C must be earned in all courses within the College of Health Professions (COHP) Core Curriculum and Major Courses sections.
