Bachelor of Science

The Nuclear Medicine Technology Program prepares students for exciting careers in this unique medical specialty. Ferris State University offers the only Nuclear Medicine Technology Program in Michigan. The program is offered in an accelerated format at the Grand Rapids campus. After graduation students are prepared to work in the field of nuclear medicine and are eligible for the national certification exams. Nuclear Medicine combines advanced technology with patient care. Radioactive medications are used to diagnose and treat disease while sophisticated scanners image various organs and tissues throughout the body.

The Nuclear Medicine Technology program at Ferris State University is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT), 820 W. Program Outcomes


  1. Graduates will communicate effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary health care team.
  2. Graduates will demonstrate correct operation of applicable radiation detection equipment.
  3. Graduates will demonstrate professionalism and integrity in their interactions with both patients and peers.
  4. Graduates will demonstrate the ability to successfully perform nuclear medicine clinical procedures required of an entry-level technologist.

Admission Requirements


New Student Admission Requirements


  • 2.70 High School GPA (on a 4.00 scale) (2.50 -2.69 with college approval)
  • Minimum Composite Score of ACT 18/SAT 950 OR 3.0 High School GPA (on a 4.00 scale) and Composite ACT 17/SAT 900

Transfer Student Admission Requirements


  • 2.50 College GPA (on a 4.00 scale)

University Requirements - 47 to 49 Credits Required


First Year Seminar Requirement (FSUS 100 or Equivalent) - 0 to 1 Credit Required

University General Education Requirements - 47 to 48 Credits Required


Courses in this section are required to satisfy the University General Education Requirements for a bachelor’s degree. The University General Education requirements can be found on the: Ferris State University General Education Requirements Webpage

Communication Competency - 12 Credits Required (or Their Equivalent)


Quantitative Literacy Competency - 3 to 4 Credits Required (or Their Equivalent)


Natural Sciences Competency - 8 Credits Required


Two courses are required with a minimum of 6 credits: must have at least one lab course.

Culture Competency - 9 Credits Required


Three courses are required with a minimum of 9 credits: must be from two different disciplines and have at least one 200 level or higher course.

Self and Society Competency - 9 Credits Required


Three courses are required with a minimum of 9 credits: must be from two different disciplines, have at least one 200 level or higher course, and at least one Self and Society Foundation course.

United States (U.S.) Diversity Competency - 1 Course Required


If not met by courses taken for Culture Competency, Self and Society Competency, or Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA), a student must have one course with the United States (U.S.) Diversity attribute. Some courses include both Global and United States (U.S.) Diversity attributes.

Global Diversity Competency - 1 Course Required


If not met by courses taken for Culture Competency, Self and Society Competency, or Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA), a student must have one course with the Global Diversity attribute. Some courses include both Global and United States (U.S.) Diversity attributes.

Collaboration Competency - Courses Required Met in College Requirements


If not met by courses taken in the College Requirements section, a student must have two courses with the Collaboration attribute. Some courses include both Collaboration and Problem Solving attributes.

Problem Solving Competency - Courses Required Met in College Requirements


If not met by courses taken in the College Requirements section, a student must have two courses with the Problem Solving attribute. Some courses include both Collaboration and Problem Solving attributes.

Additional General Education Requirements - 6 Credits Required


These courses are additional General Education courses to meet the requirements for this specific program.

College Requirements - 73 Credits Required


Qualifying Courses - Credits Required Met in University General Education Requirements or College of Health Professions (COHP) Core Curriculum


These courses are qualifying courses for entry into the Nuclear Medicine (NM) major and are used to meet some University General Education Requirements and College of Health Professions (COHP) Core Curriculum requirements. These courses require a grade of C or higher.

College of Health Professions (COHP) Core Curriculum - 11 Credits Required


Electives - 2 Credits Required


The credits required may vary depending on courses taken.

In order to graduate with a bachelor’s degree, a student must have a minimum of 120 credits. The electives required for each student may vary depending on courses taken. Based on how a student meets the programmatic requirements, they may need more or less than 2 credits of elective courses to meet the required 120 credit minimum.

Notes


  • Students who return to the university after an interrupted enrollment, not including summer semester, must normally meet the requirements of the curriculum which are in effect at the time of their return, not the requirements which were in effect when they were originally admitted.
  • Credit Variance - Credits required may vary based on course placement, prerequisites, etc. If you have questions, contact your advisor.

Admission Requirements - To the Professional Sequence


  • Students must be admitted to Ferris State University.
  • Students must obtain a minimum 2.50 GPA (on a 4.00 scale).
  • Students must obtain a grade of C or higher in the following courses: MATH 115 , CHEM 114 , BIOL 251 , BIOL 252 , PHYS 130 , COHP 100 , ENGL 150 , Communication Competency course, and Culture Competency elective course.
  • All Mathematics (MATH), Biology (BIOL), and Chemistry (CHEM) courses must meet the above requirements within two attempts. A withdrawal, W grade, counts as an attempt.

Graduation Requirements


In order to graduate from Ferris State University, students must meet both University and Programmatic Graduation Requirements.

University Graduation Requirements


These are the minimum graduation requirements for a bachelor’s degree at Ferris State University:

  • All requirements as specified in the University Requirements section must be met.
  • A minimum of 120 credits must be earned.
  • A 2.00 or higher cumulative Ferris State University GPA is required.
  • A minimum of 30 credits must be earned from Ferris State University to meet the Residency requirement.
  • A minimum of 40 credits of 300 level or higher courses must be earned.

Programmatic Graduation Requirements


These are the additional graduation requirements mandated by the program:

  • All requirements as specified in the College Requirements section must be met.
  • A 2.50 or higher cumulative Ferris State University GPA is required.
  • A minimum grade of C must be earned in all courses. The exception is ENGL 150 , which requires a grade of C- or higher. Any student that receives grade of less than a C in one Nuclear Medicine Technology course must stop the Nuclear Medicine Technology sequence. Students must reapply to the program to repeat the course the next time it is offered if a seat is available. Two unsuccessful attempts in any required course will result in dismissal from the Nuclear Medicine Technology (NM) program.
